Sara Fairley named Carson-Newman Eagle Scholar

2013 Aug 27

Sara Fairley, of Charlotte, is among the first ever group of Eagle Scholars at Carson-Newman University.

The University is the first among South Atlantic Conference (SAC) schools to establish a program that recognizes both academic and athletic achievement.

The Eagle Scholars initiative recognizes a high level of academic achievement among Carson-Newman's student-athletes. Fairley, a Volleyball athlete, is among the student-athletes with a cummulative GPA of 3.25 or higher and will begin the season with the "torch of knowledge" patch attached to the sports' uniform.

"Our scholar-athletes do a phenomenal job of representing our University both in the classroom and in competition," said Dr. Kina Mallard, Carson-Newman executive vice president and provost. "This new initiative allows Carson-Newman to recognize those athletes who have reached a level of outstanding academic achievement."

An August 26 ceremony recognized this year's 71 Eagle Scholars in front of their peers, teammates and coaches.
